Recently my Droid began bugging me because I was low on memory. Even with deleting all the apps I could spare, moving apps to the SD card, and almost elminating text messages I still ran out of memory and was unable to receive new text messages or update applications. The cause? My e-mail application TouchDown.

TouchDown is a great e-maill app for those of us connecting to e-mail servers such as Microsoft Exchange who want a lot of control of our e-mail, the ability to download folders, and not having incoming e-mail wake us up at 3 AM. TouchDown can also use a lot of space – 45 MB in my case.

Fortunately, there is a solution. You can change the location where TouchDown stores the database to the SD card. They caution against it as there is a possibility of issues when accessing Exchange while the SD card is mounted on the PC. Since my Droid’s SD card is rarely mounted this shouldn’t be an issue.

How do you move your TouchDown database to SD card? “From the main Touchdown screen, press the Menu icon and choose More | Profiles and you will see the first screen above. Long-press the Default Account name, and you will see the second screen. You would choose Move to SD Card. It will give you a warning and then it only takes a couple of minutes and you are good to go. You can move it back at any time….” – The complete article with a screen shot can be viewed at: http://www.simplemobilereview.com/nitrodesk-touchdown-save-your-data-to-the-sd-card/.

So this is Christmas
And what have you done
Another year over
And a new one just begun
Ans so this is Christmas
I hope you have fun
The near and the dear one
The old and the young

As I listen to the words of one of my favorite Christmas songs I am reflecting how appropriate this famous John Lennon tune is right now for America. The subtitle of the song, “War is over,” is appropriate as the war in Iraq is declared over and our last troops have left.

“What have you done…” urges us to reflect on this past year which has been so tough for America and many of our clients.

For my family and my staff at VanGuard Technologies it was a huge year. Among the family we lost a child and we gained three. We had some health scares, some good times, and some bad. On the business side we took some major risks and  spent a lot of money to upgrade and improve services to our clients. We said goodbye to some friends and gained some new ones. We gutted our website and started over from scratch. We attended industry events in Toronto, Columbus, Chicago, Miami, and Nashville. I made the MSPMentor Top 250 and was added to the Level Platforms Partner Advisory Council.  We began doing Autotask and Level Platforms implemtation consulting. We got into phone systems with TalkSwitch. We provided assistance to many IT providers getting their business off the ground. We implemented our new Websites That Work flat fee based web design system which was a hit. Office 365 came out and  generated a lot of revenue for us while saving our clients time and money. We said welcome to several new clients. On top of all that we went to a full time 9×5 help desk and a 60 minute guaranteed response.

2011 was our busiest year ever. We gratefully thank our wonderful clients who have made our success possible. We promise to strive even harder in 2012 to do an even better job.

From myself, Kristy, Paul, and Mike
Welcome home to our troops and we wish everyone:

A very merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Let’s hope it’s a good one
Without any fear

Steve Jobs

Apple Founder Steve Jobs Dead at 56

Jason Mack of the Toledo Free Press wrote a wonderful tribute to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in today’s web edition of the Toledo Free Press. In this article he weaves in reflections and comments from President Obama, competitors, and friends as well as from Toledo area tech personalites.

While I normally am happy to assist the Free Press, this is one quote I had wished I never would be asked for:

http://www.toledofreepress.com/2011/10/06/jobs-remembered-for-innovation-entrepreneurship/

Hanging on my wall in my office are my MCT certificate, my MCSE certificate, Bob Parson’s 16 rules of Success, and this:

“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you you do.”
- Steve Jobs

I love what I do because of what Steve Jobs created.

Steve Jobs is  a huge reason that I am in this career. I remember being seven years old and walking into the Dodge City Public Library and seeing this thing. They called it a computer and it said Apple
][e on it (or was it //e).
I spent a lot of time on that machine and the IIc+ and my IIgs.
About two years ago in Detroit I got to meet Steve Wozniak and thanked him for making those Apple computers that started my fascination with all things digital. Unfortunately, I was never able to thank Mr. Jobs.
VanGuard Technologies exists because of the vision of Steve Jobs. He was an amazing human being.
Rest in Peace Steve.
Matt (who still has that IIc+)

I’ll be speaking at another cloud event on Friday, May 6th. This time I’ll be in Chicago. I’ve been invited by Intronis, a leader in on-site data backup software for manged service providers. I’ll be speaking on VanGuard’s proven success using best practices to deliver big company business continuity and disaster recovery services to small businesses. They knew I couldn’t pass up a good steak.

If you haven’t checked out all the ways that we can protect your critical files, Microsoft Exchange, and Microsoft SQL databases then you should give us a call. And if you’re going to be in the Chicago area on Friday and want a free lunch at Mike Ditka’s Restaurant, then give me a call and I’ll send you an invite.
